OREO!
Almost been with us a week! Wow, the week went fast!
So... to tell Oreo's story. I had decided that I was going to go to the SPCA to pick out a new puppy after I finished working and to train a new dog over the summer. We still love Nickel-boy to pieces, but he is getting old and usually sleeps, eats, and potties (not on command) and is now having a hard time hearing and seeing. The doctor actually thinks he probably has doggy-dementia. We give him as much love as we can, but he isn't 'fun' to play with anymore for the kiddos.
So... the story begins... Bob did not want me to just get a dog from the SPCA because his words, "We don't know the dogs background or history and we don't know what we will be getting." I was willing to take that risk, but Bob wasn't. Bob looked on the internet at some adds website and saw that a woman was selling Shih Tzus. Bob really likes moms Shih Tzu so I guess he had decided that was the kind of dog he wanted to get. (We had decided to give the bigger dogs a break for now, bigger dog = bigger mess!!) We called on Saturday and spoke to the woman selling them. She shared that she had 2 pups for sale. The story went as follows:
"Moose is 14 weeks old and just wasn't picked from the last litter. Lucky was picked but returned. Why? The new owner was crating Lucky all night long, then all day long while they were at work, leaving him out of a crate for about 4 hours in a 24 hour span. Not fair to the puppy and they returned him."
Our schedule was crazy and we said we would definitely like to come and visit (She lived five minutes from University of Delaware) but would let her know when we could come. Sunday I texted her stating we could come visit on Thursday (the ONLY day that all of the family was available!) and she said she had another woman coming down on Monday, but we could come today (Sunday). We went to church, got organized, and off we went!
The breeder, Dawn and her husband were camping a couple hours away from their home, but said they would be back by 3pm. We figured we would shoot for 3:30. We got there a few minutes early and we got a call that they had had car trouble... SO... we drove around the University of Delaware campus, got some ice cream at their ice cream parlor and...waited....and waited... they ended up not getting home until 5pm-ish. I had a cranky husband on my hands!!! The kiddos were getting anxious.
We finally pulled in... oh my goodness... we had red flags IMMEDIATELY when we drove onto their property. Holy cow. The couple had like 3 or 4 campers/trailers, two or three old beat-up 'fix me up' cars, and a small little (shack-like) house. We were NOT even invited in!
Dawn shared that she has: 9 dogs, 10-15 outside cats, bunnies, ducks, and chickens/roosters. Oh my! Dawn let the dogs out and we got our first look at Lucky and Moose. Moose was a cute fur ball! He had not had his first haircut yet so he still had his soft fluff. Tan and white. But he would NOT settle down. He ran and ran and RAN! He wouldn't even let us hold him or pet him. All he wanted to do was run! Then there was Lucky. All he wanted to do was come over to the kiddos and lay down to get pet or to kiss them. Morgan took a liking to him immediatley. He let us pet his belly (IMPORTANT!!) and just seemed like a lover!
We were sold. We bought him (for a VERY reasonable $250.00) and got out of there as quickly as we could! Dawn did not know where his papers were, BUT promised she would send them as soon as she found them. *Another red flag* Off we went with new puppy. Dawn shared he was 6 months old being born on January 1st. I wasn't so sure... he really didn't seem like a puppy! He had NO crazy puppy energy! But, we shall see when we head to the vet!!
Now... our next problem... remember that Shih Tzu that my mom has? What is her name? Yup... Lucky! On the way home from Delaware we all threw out names... Morgan said Oreo! We all agreed, and there you have it... welcome home Oreo!
**When we hit the vet...he seemed healthy! WHEW! He did have fleas, awesome. He does have a hernia which we can have fixed when he gets 'fixed' and a fifth toe/toenail on all his feet which could cause a problem if the nails aren't continuously cut. The doctor did think he was about 6 months old. (That was good!) He still appeared to have some baby teeth. Yea! Overall, a clean bill of health!
So, there you have it! Oreo's story!
